“Ah, music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here!”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Unexpected creative connections are happening all the time. These experiences make life truly magical. Delightful “coincidences” are what Creative Connections is all about.
A couple of years ago while vacationing at our summer cottage, I was invited to join a group of women who meet weekly to play cards. Mary, our “teacher” taught us canasta, hearts and spades. After a couple of weeks, I asked Mary about her life at home. From what I’d seen, she was a great card player, tennis player and an amazing sailor. “Do you work for a living? How do you spend your time when you aren’t here?” She simply told me that she was a choir director in Cambridge, MA.
I later learned that Mary is the director of a jaw-droppingly good choir, Musica Sacra, with a stellar national reputation. This is all the more interesting to me because I am a musician (a flutist), myself. During our card games, I never imagined that there were any serious musicians amongst us, much less one of Mary’s caliber.
Another Layer to the Connection
The background is that I selected paint colors for a client, Jennifer in 2006 and again in 2015.
Meanwhile, in Cambridge, MA, Mary was posting on Facebook. I saw her post and commented.
Next thing I know, my old client, Jennifer, saw my comment and messaged me on Facebook. “How do you know Mary?” she asked.
It turns out, my client Jennifer sings in Mary’s choir and is the Soprano section leader!
There it is. It’s like the 6 degrees of separation phenomenon.
